Ah, the 90’s…they were a time of pinch-rolled jeans, Nintendo Game Boy video games, and questionable hairstyles. Whatever your opinion is of the culture that was vibrant in the 1990s, you can be sure that some incredible R&B music was created during this timeframe. While other genres like grunge and metal were receiving a lot of the limelight, R&B artists of the ’90s were in the background, steadily cranking out some great hits.

Here are 5 of the best of them.

5 of the Biggest 90’s R&B Artists

90’s R&B Star #1: R. Kelly

R. Kelly was an absolute mainstay in the R&B scene, especially in the mid- to late-90’s. This smooth-singing bad boy with an attitude hit it big with his 1997 release, “I Believe I Can Fly,” which has been followed up with dozens of outstanding tunes. Even though his personal life has been a bit controversial, the music of R. Kelly will live on for a long time.

90’s R&B Star #2: Mariah Carey

One of the legends of the 1990s, Mariah Carey, was known for her ultra-high pitched singing talent and ability to hold a note better than anyone else. 1997’s “Honey” really put Mariah on the map, and she’s been making great music ever since.

90’s R&B Star #3: Jodeci

When producer Devante Swing teamed up with popular R&B group Jodeci to produce the music video for “Feenin’,” the scene would never be the same again. This super-smooth ballad featured easy crooning from this mega-talented group of progressive singers.

90’s R&B Star #4: Michael Jackson

This list wouldn’t be complete without a mention of one of the greatest performers to ever live. Even though Michael Jackson is technically considered the King of Pop, he did crank out some notable R&B music in the 1990s, including “Dangerous” in 1991 and “Remember the Time” from the same year.

90’s R&B Star #5: Janet Jackson

Rounding out this list is the sister of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson. Not to be outdone by her celebrity brother Michael, Janet Jackson made her mark on the R&B world in the 1990s. With hits like “That’s the Way Love Goes” and “Black Cat,” Janet Jackson proved to the world that the Jackson family had more than just one start in it.

The truth is that the ’90s gave us a lot of great R&B music, and we just don’t have the space to list all of them here.
